When local media are directly supported by the people they serve—decreasing reliance on a single funder or revenue stream—their independence is more resilient. Money really is power—when you own your revenue streams, you own your future. Not your funders. Not Big Tech. You.
That belief is why we're excited to announce that RevEngine is now part of the Indiegraf family. This deal is part of a major strategic partnership between Indiegraf and the nonprofit consulting company News Revenue Hub, designed to bring together best-in-class technology and strategic revenue consulting in one unified partnership and experience.
Originally developed by News Revenue Hub, RevEngine is a contribution management platform that has generated more than $177 million in voluntary donations for over 200 independent newsrooms across North America. RevEngine powers membership programs for some of the most successful independent newsrooms in the field, including Bridge Michigan, Nashville Banner, and The Onion.
“We built RevEngine to make it easy for people to financially support news organizations they value and trust,” said Mary Walter-Brown, CEO of News Revenue Hub. “Indiegraf shares our commitment to supporting independent publishers, and we’re excited to see the platform continue to evolve within a company whose core focus is building smart, accessible technology solutions for news organizations.”
Indiegraf will take responsibility for the continued development and support of the RevEngine platform, while working closely with News Revenue Hub to ensure publishers also receive the strategic guidance and operational expertise needed to grow their businesses.
This deal reflects a broader trend toward strategic consolidation across the news industry, as both newsrooms and the organizations that support them look for ways to reduce duplication, strengthen coordination, and build more sustainable systems. The strategic partnership—one of the most significant deals within the journalism support ecosystem to date—underscores the importance of organizations choosing collaboration and specialization over competition.
"Indiegraf has heard loud and clear from our local media partners that they are exhausted by the fragmented ecosystem of services and tools. They are frustrated when scarce grant funding goes to intermediaries who replicate tools or won't play nice together," says Erin Millar, CEO of Indiegraf. "This partnership is our response to that critique. We are combining two of the best membership platforms in the field and intentionally moving away from services that others do better. Indiegraf and the Hub used to be competitors. We're now strategic partners pooling our expertise and resources to provide the best tools we can to serve the industry."
For independent news organizations, the outcome is more integrated infrastructure, fewer duplicative tools, and stronger alignment between technology and strategy—leading to more successful revenue programs and greater long-term sustainability.
Current RevEngine clients will experience no interruption in service. As part of the transition, Daniel Craigmile, the original architect of RevEngine, joins Indiegraf as CTO.
Local media do not need to migrate to Indiegraf’s content management system to access this best-in-class membership tool. Starting now, RevEngine will be available to purchase through Indiegraf as a standalone product that integrates into your website. And soon, it will be integrated into Indiegraf OS, including seamless integration with Indie Email to further reduce overhead for independent newsrooms.
Over the past six months, Indiegraf has expanded its suite of tools to include Hearken, Stylebot, and now RevEngine—bringing together audience engagement, editorial workflow, and reader revenue capabilities. Each of these organizations was founded by women and built with a focus on long-term newsroom sustainability. Together, these tools offer independent publishers a more cohesive and flexible infrastructure to support their growth.
By streamlining operations and eliminating institutional friction, this collaboration ensures that local newsrooms have the specialized tools and financial resilience required to maintain their independence. In an era of unprecedented volatility, building smarter, unified infrastructure is how local journalism can remain a viable and autonomous pillar of democracy.
Indiegraf is the operating system for independent local media. We defend journalism independence through revenue diversification, audience relationships, collaboration, and real support from real people.
A nonprofit organization dedicated to helping newsrooms build sustainable business models through strategic consulting, audience development, and operational expertise.
