Independent journalism is facing a polycrisis, caught between the collapse of search traffic, declining trust in news and a surge in AI-generated noise that makes it harder than ever for audiences to identify credible sources. Maintaining the rigorous editorial standards that signal authority is more critical than ever.

To fortify our partners against this disruption, Indiegraf has acquired Stylebot, enabling local news leaders to integrate editorial consistency and trust-building best practices directly into the newsroom workflow. Stylebot’s technology will become Indie Editor, an editing assistant built right into the backend of Indiegraf’s Operating System.

“Indiegraf believes that the only path in today’s hostile circumstances for independent journalism is deep, high-trust relationships with our audiences,” says Erin Millar, CEO of Indiegraf. “Stylebot isn't just an automated copy editor; it’s a vehicle for newsrooms to show their work and prove to their audience, every single day, why they are a trusted source of truth."

Founded at the USC Annenberg School of Journalism by Laura E. Davis, Stylebot is used by newsrooms across the country, including Boyle Heights Beat, CalMatters, and CBS News and Stations. It will now be accessible to the hundreds of community-focused newsrooms in the Indiegraf network.

“In an era where any robot can publish content, consistently applying a newsroom’s style guide is an essential way to operationalize our ethics and distinguish journalism from cheap content noise,” says Davis. “Making Stylebot—soon to be Indie Editor—part of the everyday workflow for Indiegraf publishers makes it easier for journalists to increase their credibility, showcase their value and make a lot of small decisions that add up to big change.”

Unlike AI tools that can hallucinate or dilute a brand's voice, Indie Editor is built on human-verified rules, including the USC Annenberg Style Guide and Trusting News research. It ensures that every word choice and abbreviation is accurate, consistent and free of unintentional bias, allowing every newsroom to maintain a high level of quality and apply trust best practices without increasing their workload.

“Bringing Stylebot into Indiegraf is a smart, strategic step: embedding high-quality editorial support directly into the product in a way that’s seamless for publishers,” says Phillip Saunders, CEO of New Media Ventures, an investor in both Indiegraf and Stylebot. “Laura built Stylebot with a deep understanding of how newsrooms operate, and it shows in both the product and the impact it’s already had. Together, this integration helps newsrooms maintain consistency, strengthen trust with their audiences and operate more effectively day to day.”

Starting in May 2026, Stylebot will be available as a standard feature in Indiegraf’s website product.

As part of the integration, Davis joins Indiegraf as the Entrepreneur in Residence, AI. Her expertise will help Indiegraf deeply understand how publishers are navigating AI—their specific pain points and goals—to ensure the Indiegraf OS AI roadmap is safe, ethical and secure.
