There are so many great newsletters covering the journalism industry, but so little time to read them all. Journalism newsletters can be a great way to stay on top of the latest headlines and industry news, all in your inbox.

It’s hard to keep track of all of the newsletters out there, so we’ve rounded up 12 must-reads to add to your rotation, covering hot topics like SEO, press freedom, and the ever-changing news industry for journalists across the U.S., Canada, and Latin America.

1. LatAm Journalism Review

For journalists in Latin America or publications that are publishing in Spanish, the LatAm Journalism Review might be for you. 

The LatAm Journalism Review is based out of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin’s Moody College of Communication. 

Offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese, the LatAm Journalism Review sends out a weekly newsletter covering the latest headlines about press freedom in Latin America, and collected news articles from the region. 

2. WTF is SEO? 

If the phrase “search engine optimization” strikes fear in your heart, this newsletter is for you. 

Run by news SEO and audience specialists Shelby Blackley and Jessie Willms, the weekly newsletter WTF is SEO? covers all aspects of search engine optimization (SEO) for publishers, including headline strategies, Google News updates, and what publishers need to know about zero-click search

3.  Project C 

For all the creator journalists out there, Project C is a newsletter focused on helping solo and creator journalists build sustainable businesses. 

Founded by Liz Kelly Nelson, Project C publishes stories about the creator economy, from platform decentralization to data on the creator journalist economy. They also offer a community space for creator journalists to connect. 

4. Inbox Collective

If you don’t know where to start with your newsletter, Inbox Collective is a great newsletter to add to your reading list. 

It’s a newsletter about the newsletter business, run by former Director of Newsletters at BuzzFeed Dan Oshinsky. Inbox Collective covers all aspects of creating and monetizing your newsletter, such as selling newsletter ads, tips for advertising your newsletter, and leveraging email automations.

5. SEO for Google News

Another newsletter about SEO, SEO for Google News bills itself as an “irregular newsletter” written by UK-based SEO consultant Barry Adams. 

Beyond just its namesake topic, SEO for Google News also covers topics like survival strategies for publishers in an increasingly AI-dominated search landscape.

6. Second Rough Draft

Written by Dick Tofel, the founding general manager of ProPublica, Second Rough Draft is a newsletter about wider trends in the journalism industry, such as the state of nonprofit journalism funding and advertising in public media

Tofel tackles the industry’s big topics with the expertise and knowledge from his long career in media.

7. Sembra Media

Sembra Media, an organization that empowers local digital news across Latin America, also publishes a monthly Sustainable Connections newsletter

The newsletter highlights resources and opportunities for journalists, as well as updates from Project Oasis, their initiative to map digital media around the world. 

8. Local Media Association

The Local Media Association, a trade organization representing over 3,000 local media members, sends out a weekly newsletter to keep members and readers updated on their biggest stories.

9. Inside the Newsroom 

For freelancers and journalism job-seekers, Inside the Newsroom is the newsletter for you. 

Written by Daniel Levitt, Inside the Newsroom describes itself as the biggest job board for journalism in the world. They also publish freelance pitch calls for writers and reporters looking to pitch their work to publications.

10. Columbia Journalism Review

Another all-purpose newsletter, the Columbia Journalism Review publishes stories about the journalism world. 

Their newsletter shares the latest headlines that are relevant to journalists, such as the importance of local news in covering immigration raids, Meta’s ban on political ads in Europe, and local TV news.

11. International Center for Journalists 

If you’re searching for a global perspective to add to your reading list, the International Center for Journalists’ newsletter covers topics relevant to journalists around the world. 

Their newsletter features engaging news, like this story on combatting misinformation in Brazil, as well as tips for cultivating audience engagement from independent journalists.

Plus, check out the International Journalists’ Network, a project of the ICFJ, whose newsletter shares opportunities and resources for journalists. 

12. Poynter

The global nonprofit Poynter publishes several weekly newsletters for its global audience of journalists. 

Poynter aims to empower democracy through advocating for media education and ethical journalism. Their Local Edition newsletter, written by Kristen Hare, focuses on the local news economy in the United States. 

Also through the Poynter Institute is the International Fact-Checking Network’s Factually newsletter, which covers global misinformation news and highlights noteworthy fact-checks.

13. LION Publishers

LION Publishers helps independent news publishers build more sustainable businesses, with 450+ members in the U.S. and Canada.

14. News Product Alliance

For those interested in the product side of the industry, Product Notes is the News Product Alliance’s biweekly newsletter.
