VANCOUVER — May 20 2026 — Indiegraf today announced a $5 million program-related investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, solidifying the company’s role as a leading technology provider to the independent local journalism industry.
This new funding will accelerate Indiegraf’s mission to ensure every community is served by a resilient, sovereign news outlet by scaling its Operating System to up to 500 communities. As part of the agreement, Indiegraf pledges to ensure that half of the newsrooms it supports focus on serving underrepresented communities.
This investment powers Indiegraf’s Tech for Journalism Program, providing subsidies of up to 70% to independent news organizations that meet public benefit criteria. Indiegraf has also committed to investing in tech development that lowers the cost of digital infrastructure for local media — ensuring long-term affordability once subsidies phase out and putting more revenue directly in the hands of newsroom leaders.

Indiegraf gives publishers the tools to diversify their income, deepen relationships with readers and focus on covering the stories that matter," said Amalie Nash, vice president for journalism at Knight Foundation. "We believe local news is an investable asset, one that can serve the public good while attracting socially-conscious investment capital."
The investment is structured to directly link Indiegraf’s financial success with its impact on local news in the communities that need it most—while enabling returns to be recycled into future grantmaking for the field.

Over 180 newsrooms, including large and small digital media, newspapers, radio and public media, use Indiegraf to diversify their revenue and deepen audience engagement. Since 2020, Indiegraf has generated over $31 million in direct funding for its local partners.
Knight Foundation was an early supporter of Indiegraf’s model for independent local media, with a $1.56 million grant to the News Startup Fund which provided capital to 24 early stage news organizations. Local newsrooms supported grew revenues by over 450% on average during their time in the program.
