Maritza L. Félix shared how she built Conecta Arizona — a Spanish-language news service that connects communities along the U.S.-Mexico border. What began as a WhatsApp group during the pandemic has grown into a multi-platform news organization, reaching audiences through social media, newsletters, WhatsApp, and podcasts.

Meet the speaker

Maritza L. Félix is an award-winning independent journalist, producer, and writer in Arizona. She founded Conecta Arizona, a Spanish-language news service, and created the podcast Cruzando Líneas. She is also a co-producer and co-host of Comadres al Aire.
In 2022, she was named Innovator of the Year by the Local Media Association and received the Cecilia Vaisman Award as the best Hispanic multimedia journalist from Northwestern University and NAHJ.
A senior fellow of the JSK Community Impact Fellowship at Stanford, Félix is also a graduate of the Executive Program in News Innovation at CUNY. She has received fellowships from The Carter Center, EWA, Feet in 2 Worlds, IWMF’s “Adelante,” and Listening Post Collective.
In 2020, she was named one of Take The Lead’s “50 Women Can Change the World in Journalism.” Félix has been named “Best Spanish-language Journalist in Arizona” twice and one of the “40 Hispanic Personalities Under 40 in Arizona”.
