Erin Millar is the CEO and Co-founder of Indiegraf where she works to grow community media businesses across Canada and the U.S. She’s a journalist and entrepreneur who founded The Discourse, where she led an award-winning journalism team and developed a successful business model for in-depth local news. She regularly contributes as an industry organizer and advocate on government policy. She is chair of the Canadian Journalism Collective, a non-profit created to distribute $100 million annual fund from Google to support sustainability and innovation in the Canadian news ecosystem.
StandUp Ventures led the round with participation from Coralus and Mucker Capital supporting Indiegraf’s mission to empower independent media businesses across the globe.
Just over a week ago, the Canadian government officially passed C-18, the Online News Act. The legislation is designed to compel tech giants to pay news publishers for links to news content.
With support from the Google News Initiative, Knight Foundation and McConnell Foundation, Indiegraf will provide funding and services to help founders grow their outlets on a rolling basis for the next three years.
