2023 Journalism Events on Our Radar

Here’s a list of conferences and other journalism events to look out for in 2023.

Among the many highlights of 2022, we were fortunate to attend multiple journalism conferences and connect (or reconnect) with indie journalists in person. For us, it was a great opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from all of the talented people in our industry. 

We’ve gathered a list of conferences and industry events for journalists, publishers and news entrepreneurs to consider attending this year:

Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit
 Jan. 31 – Feb. 1
Where: Online
The Lenfest News Philanthropy Summit will explore the world of philanthropic support for news organizations, from an overall look at the current state of news philanthropy to specific strategies to optimize fundraising in 2023. Check out more details and register for the free, virtual summit.

 March 2 – 5
Where: Nashville, Tennessee
Hosted by Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE), NICAR23 will offer panels, demos and workshops on data journalism for a wide range of skill levels and expertise. While the full program is still in process, you can check out some of the initial sessions and register online before Jan. 30 to receive the Early Bird fee.

 March 10 – 19
Where: Austin, Texas
The South by Southwest Conference provides digital creatives with the opportunity to share and exchange cutting-edge ideas in the areas of tech, film, music, education and more. Check out the schedule for the “Media Industry” Track, which includes sessions on AI, brand building, storytelling and product thinking.

International Journalism Festival
 April 19 – 23
Where: Perugia, Italy
The International Journalism Festival (IJF) is the biggest annual media event in Europe and a great opportunity to network with journalists from around the world. All IJF sessions are free entry for all attendees, without the need for tickets or registration. You can check out their website and sign up for their newsletter to get the full program in February.

News Product Alliance Summit
April 26 – 28
Where: Online
The News Product Alliance Summit is a virtual event for news product thinkers to come together and exchange ideas, co-create best practices for the news industry and learn new product skills. The official schedule is still in progress, but you can find more information on the News Product Alliance website.

Collaborative Journalism Summit
 June 8 – 9
Where: Washington, D.C.
Hosted by the Center for Cooperative Media and the Institute for Nonprofit News, the Collaborative Journalism Summit will be jam-packed with lightning talks, workshops and participatory discussions about a wide range of collaborative journalism topics and projects. Podcast Movement
 Aug. 21 – 24
Where: Denver, Colorado
If you are building a podcast product for your local news outlet, Podcast Movement is the conference for you. Join thousands of podcasters and industry professionals from around the world for this four-day event featuring workshops, panels and keynote talks (official program yet to be announced).

Aug. 23 – 26
Where: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Thousands of journalists, publishers, educators, audience strategists and analytics professionals travel every year for the Online News Association’s annual conference. Visit ONA’s website and sign up for their newsletter to receive the latest updates on calls for session pitches, fellowship opportunities and more. 

Global Investigative Journalism Conference
 Sept. 19 – 22
Where: Gothenburg, Sweden
The world’s largest international gathering of investigative reporters and editors will meet once more in Europe, where the first global conference first took place. The conference will include trainings, workshops and brainstorming sessions for investigative journalists from around the world. You can find more information here.
